INTRODUCTION TO TAROT CARDS

In recent years Tarot cards have become a tool for many to tap into the deeper meanings life can have, Michelle Walter briefly outlines the history of Tarot cards..

Tarot has been called the ‘universal key to understanding life’, perhaps because it brings secrets out into the open where they can be seen consciously, talked about and understood. A Tarot deck comprises 78 cards, which are divided into 22 Major Arcana, and 56 Minor Arcana cards. The word “Arcana”from the word Arcane simply means mysteries, secrets, that which is hidden.

The Tarot card names themselves contain links to the wisdom of ancient civilizations, e.g. Egypt, the learned secrets from the Book of Thoth, the Jewish Kabbalah, which has 22 symbols like the 22 major arcana, as well as Chinese and Indian philosophies.

But nobody really knows the historical origins of the Tarot cards. What we do know is that the Tarot cards have evolved out of people’s search for meaning in their lives, and that it embodies many shared truths. The first historically recorded use of Tarot was by King Charles VI, in Paris in 1393. This deck was called the Marseille Deck. In comparison to recorded uses of Astrology, Rune Stones and the I Ching, which go back to ancient and even prehistoric times, the Tarot seems not to have a very long history. There is a widely held assumption though that Tarot cards were being used in secret prior to any recorded use, and for many years when they were actually banned from public use in a number of European countries.

The key in reading the Tarot is to remember that it is not just a set of cards with preconceived meanings you must learn. Rather, Tarot is a medium through which people can communicate their intuitions and insights, about each other, to each other. As you consciously develop your relationship with the Tarot cards, you link in with the lineage of meaning passed down through the network of harmony. Learning to read the Tarot intuitively is the most intelligent way because you are not trying to guess or learn meanings out of a book. Through the Tarot you are learning to harness a natural power you have in your subconscious mind
If you have a set of Tarot cards, try this simple intuition exercise, to begin the process of learning to read the Tarot cards …..

• Firstly, separate out the major arcana cards from the minor arcana.

• Hold the Tarot cards between your hands while you relax and breathe in and out at least three times. Each time you breathe out, feel yourself relaxing down into a more receptive state of consciousness.

• Now think about the question you are seeking guidance from the Tarot on.
• Slowly shuffle the Tarot cards. Place the Tarot deck face down on the table, cut the tarot cards once, place the bottom pile on the top, and then turn over one card.

• Take a few moments to meditate on the tarot card. What are your first impressions? Write these down in a journal. Try not to analyze or filter what you feel or see in this tarot card – it may be a colour, a face, or something in the background which stands out to you. Your first impression of this tarot card may be a saying that comes to you or an understanding about life. It doesn’t have to be a definite conclusion about meaning because often our first impressions are quite vague.

• Try doing this every day for a week, and see what you discover for yourself!

MEDIUMSHIP

Communicating with the dead has never been considered an unusual occurrence until modern times. Cathy Cox dispels some of the myths surrounding this ancient art of mediumship.

Mediumship Today

Over the last few years there has been a rise in the public interest in the whole process of mediumship – that is, communicating with people who have died. With programs such as John Edwards’ ‘Crossing Over’, the whole process has been brought to our lounge rooms. We seem both startled and skeptical as the medium communicates to loved ones and gives messages from beyond the grave, in what can be tear jerking, humorous or even to the point where we think “Wow! How could the medium know that?”

Mediumship in Ancient Cultures.

Within the linear time framework of modern day thinking, the whole process of mediumship with people who are deceased seems unbelievable, but this has not always been the case. The truth is that our modern “scientific way” of viewing the world and life after death is more abnormal in human history rather than the norm. Almost every culture and civilization has recognized there is a medium between this world and the world of people who have passed over. Through this medium, they have developed a way of communicating and relating to loved ones and other beings who may exist in those realms and who are interested in communicating with us. The medium or shaman in many primal societies was much respected.

Mediumship Today.

As a psychic, I have found mediumship to be in some ways the most challenging of the psychic arts, but at the same time, the most rewarding, as you make a connection with someone who has passed away and are able to contribute to renewing a link between the person who has been left behind and the person who has died, a truly fulfilling experience for everyone involved. The skill I have found with mediumship is that it is in essence a case of having to suspend your logical processes and open up to the different levels of communication. When you step into being a medium, messages, insights and understandings can come through freely and easily. When you battle with this, it can turn into a real ‘head trip’. What I have also realized is that mediumship in its own way, once you have the basics in place, is easy to do.

Mediumship is a skill that can be learned.

We have turned the process of mediating with people who have died into something only a ‘god-gifted’ psychic can do, when in truth, it should in essence be natural to all of us. Not only can anyone learn to be a medium with people who have died, I would say it should be compulsory that in schools throughout the world, children should be taught this ancient art. The truth is that we all will face the death of a loved one at some point in time. We will all, when the time is right, face our own death. As we come into contact with the death of those we love and the death of ourselves, our ability and confidence to relate to those from either world can transform this from being a frightening experience to a natural and healthy part of the whole cycle of life. So I would encourage anyone wanting to learn the skill, which can be life transforming, to take up the process of learning mediumship.

CLAIRVOYANCY

Michelle Walter looks into the phenomena of Clairvoyance, Clairaudience and Clairsentient and dispels the myth that they are only for the chosen few.

Some people believe that clairvoyance or psychic ability is something that you are born with. Some of us have it some of us don’t. However research shows that most people can actually be trained to develop clairvoyant abilities to a strong degree. As a clairvoyant working professionally for Gaye Wright over the past 8 years I can certainly vouch for the fact that there is no replacement for training and experience. I have taught Gaye’s Intuitive Development Courses in both Australia and UK and had the pleasure of seeing people who previously felt that they had no psychic ability learn to ‘tune in’ and really begin to listen to the voice of their intuition. On the other hand I have seen people who seem to have all the bells and whistles of a good psychic, picking out names and seeing places, yet not having a clue about what it all means!

Clairvoyance and the trap of wishful thinking

Being clairvoyant means listening to the voice of your intuition and understanding what this voice is telling you. Some people see all kinds of images and things, but it does not necessarily mean they are clairvoyant. Psychic ability is part receptivity (receiving images and messages and opening yourself to the universe) and part creativity (taking these messages and weaving them into an intelligent and empowering message for your life now. As the Buddha says, Compassion without Wisdom is stupid. And indeed, psychic messages without insight are also stupid.

Clairvoyance and knowing the right answer…

When you start to listen to the voice of your intuition it is great to start sharing what you are discovering with others. Many of my clients do this in their readings, they check out their interpretations with me and I can guide them towards a real understanding or confirm what they were feeling. Through this process you get stronger and stronger in your clairvoyance skills. Having an open mind to what your intuition might be telling you and exploring various interpretations is very important in clairvoyance. You learn to use your own inner sense to work out what is the right interpretation for you. The key is not being dogmatic.

Clairvoyance and different ways of seeing.

Most people don’t realise this but people can be clairvoyant in different ways. This is one of my favourite little tests to discover your intuitive style:
Think about someone or something you really love. Write 10 lines off the top of your head about this person or thing you love.
When you have finished examine what you written. Read the following four categories to see what comes through most strongly in what you have written:
Clairvoyance, which means clear seeing, relates specifically to the visual capacity. A clairvoyant will dream a lot, speak in visual language using images, detailed descriptions of things.
E.g. “My dog has the softest black fur and biggest brown puppy dog eyes…”

What being clairvoyant means for you….
You could have wild dreams, bizarre experience, UFO sightings, and ghosts visiting you, any number or paranormal experiences! Clairvoyant experiences can be quite frightening if you are not used to them. You have to be careful not to be a drama queen, as this can turn a simple intuition into a full scale epic. Your clairvoyance is very connected to your creativity and as you develop one you will set the other one free. Learn to enjoy your clairvoyance gift and not turn it into a curse. The key is to share with others and develop your visualisation ability through conscious visualisation and meditation so you become familiar with the territory!

Clairsentient
Clairsentient means clear sensing. This relates to the body and gut feelings, sensations, knowingness about things. In clairsentience you say express how things are without using messages or images,
e.g. “I feel a strong connection with my dog, I know he understands me and I feel relaxed around him”

What being clairsentient means for you.
People who are clairsentient have strong gut feelings about people and often can have a knowing about what may happen in the future. The challenge for you is not to jump to conclusions, but stay calm until you get a clear sense of what you are feeling. If you get anxious or angry you will race ahead with the first thought that comes to you and end up feeling that you were wrong. Relaxation practice is very helpful and important for you. The more relaxed you are, the more accurate your ‘gut feelings’ will be.

Clairaudient
Clairaudient means clear hearing. This relates to message, spoken or received. You don’t necessarily have to hear an actual voice; it may just be words that pop into your head, or specific sentences or words or references to sounds.
E.g.: “My dog barely ever barks but he lets me know when he wants to be fed”

What being Clairaudient means for you.
We see more dramatic images of clairaudience in the media than any other psychic art. People’s bodies are taken over by other beings and channel through messages, people receiving uncanny messages from people who have passed on. These are valuable experiences but they can make you lose your authority if you are not clear who is in charge of the communication process. You are a messenger of harmony. As you open yourself up to other people who are in harmony you can speak for them. You do not need to abandon your body or your will and become a puppet (as seen on TV). To be honest sometimes this happens because people are afraid that if they don’t appear authentic then no-one will hear their message. The truth is when you are channelling or doing mediusmship it is a shared message coming from you and the person you are connecting with. Your mind, thoughts and feelings are involved you are not merely a vessel. It is a collaboration of you and the other person and you are helping them to say what they need to say. So if you see it this way you can try as best you can to convey the feeling and the message the other being is sharing with you. You are giving them a great service.

Empathy.
The third form of clairvoyance is knowingness about how another person is feelings. Being able to put yourself in their shoes and describe their feelings about the world.
“E.g. my dog is so happy because he feels that love and attention is all he needs in life.”

What being Empathic means for you…
Often empaths have tremendous healing ability.
Don’t forget you can be all 4!
